Kailash Manasarovar Yatra by Road - All routes from India

Kailash is in Tibet, the autonomous region of China. While most of the routes for Kailash Manasarovar yatra by road are via Nepal and China, India offers two roads for you to take on your journey. However, you will have to go via the route that is mutually permitted by both governments. Here are the two routes to reach your divine destination:

  • Road To Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Via Sikkim

The Kailash Manasarovar Road via the Nathu La Pass in Sikkim is much tame than any other route taking you to Kailash Mansarovar. With a duration of 21 days, this route takes you through the vast Tibetan Plateau. This route is only operated by the Govt of India and it’s very expensive.

  • Kailash Manasarovar Yatra by Road Via Kumaon in Uttarakhand

The duration of this Kailash Manasarovar Road is 24 days. You will start from Delhi and go through various important sites like Patal Bhuvaneshwar, Narayan Ashram, etc. You can take the route through Johar Valley, and Dharchula – Tawaghat – Lipulekh pass to Kailash. While most of the Himalayan passes in Kumaun and Garhwal can give access to this sacred mountain, pilgrims from India are permitted to go for Kailash Manasarovar Yatra by road via Lipulekh pass. The pilgrimage to Kailash is 30 Kms. to its south. It is run exclusively by the Kumaun Mandal Vikash Nigam (KMVN) – a government organization working in collaboration with the Government of India's Ministry of External Affairs, and the Chinese Government. This route is also operated by the Government of India and it’s very expensive.

  • Kailash Manasarovar Road via Nepal from Kathmandu.

Kailash Manasarovar Yatra by road from Kathmandu is the most preferred and cost-effective also less time-consuming. It’s required only 13 to 14 days to complete the entire tour. The road condition is excellent as compared to other by-road options. You enter Chinese territory only after 8 hours of drive from Kathmandu.

New Road to Kailash Manasarovar

India has completed a new road for Kailash Manasarovar yatra by road yatris. Which can cut down your journey time by at least 6 days. This 80 Km stretch connects Lipulekh Pass with Ghatiabgarh. The road confluences with Lipulekh pass at a height of 17, 000 feet. This Kailash Manasarovar new route allows the pilgrims to complete 80% of their journey through the Indian soil itself but the cost will remain high as the cost is always decided by the Chinese authorities.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by Road – Which Route to Choose

The Kailash Manasarovar Road via Sikkim should be a perfect choice if you are traveling with elderly people. This route is not as rugged as the other routes connecting you to Kailash Mansarovar. But this route is longer and takes more than 20 days’ time, also the cost is high as it’s a route operated by the Govt of India.

On the other hand, traveling through Uttarakhand, shortens your journey time, as Kailash lies in closer proximity to Uttarakhand. Besides the construction of the new Kailash Manasarovar Road, the connectivity is made smoother. All thanks to the Border Road Organisation India, the 80 km- stretch has come as a messiah.

The best and preferably Kailash Manasarovar Yatra by road option is from Kathmandu. In this route, the duration is very less and very cost-effective. You don’t require to go through any selection process if you are opting for this route. On the other hand, if you chose the Uttarakhand or Sikkim route then you need to apply for your participation, after selection you need to do a health check-up then you are allowed to do the yatra. Also, the Uttarakhand and Sikkim route is very costly as compared to the Kathmandu route.

Having said all that, the decision lies on your shoulder. While all the routes are practical, choose the one that best suits your budget and time.
